Design System

The benefits of making a design system for Floorplanner

The problem

Design systems have become increasingly popular in recent years as a way to streamline and standardize the design and development process for digital products. At Floorplanner, a company with 25 million users worldwide, we recognized that the current designs had trouble with consistency and were not easy scalable for the further ambitions of Floorplanner. Also having no design system makes the design proces of a product development team so much slower.

Solution

Together with my colleague Bjorn Post, Design Lead at Valsplat, we got the opportunity to work on this. The first step in creating the design system was to examine each component of of Floorplanner based on best practices and accessibility. This included everything from color palettes and typography to layout and functionality. By establishing clear guidelines for these elements, we were able to create a cohesive look and feel for the screens that met the needs of the users.

Next, we worked with Floorplanner to identify common patterns and interactions in the current designs. By creating a set of reusable components, we were able to streamline the development process and create more consistency in the screens. This not only made it easier for the teams to work together, but it also enables the product team to build and scale the products more efficiently.

Result

One of the key benefits of the design system was its impact on cross-functional collaboration. With a consistent approach to design and execution, the teams are now able to work together more effectively on each new project from start to finish. The result was a system that also helped Floorplanner say goodbye to operational silos.
