The problem
At KLM Cargo, we were always looking for ways to improve the user experience and streamline our customers' shipping processes. That's why we decided to design and implement a new feature called Allotments. Allotments allows customers to reserve a certain amount of cargo space in advance, ensuring that they have a guaranteed spot for their shipments. I worked on this project alongside Bjorn Post, Design Lead at Valsplat.
One of the main challenges that our customers faced is the uncertainty of cargo space availability. This can be especially problematic for customers who need to ship large quantities of goods on a regular basis. Without a guaranteed spot for their shipments, they may have to scramble to find alternative transportation at the last minute, which can be costly and time-consuming.
Solution
The first step in the design process was to brainstorm ideas for the Allotments feature. We held a series of brainstorming sessions with the product team to generate a list of potential features and functionalities. After generating a list of ideas, we conducted user research to understand the needs and pain points of our customers.
Based on the research, we identified the following key requirements for the Allotments feature: It should be easy for customers to reserve cargo space in advance. It should be flexible enough to accommodate different types of shipments. It should provide customers with visibility into their allotment usage. Using the insights from the user research, we created wireframes to visualize the flow and layout of the Allotments feature. The wireframes focused on the key functionalities of the feature, reserving cargo space and tracking usage. Before releasing we tested our prototype with different markets around the world.

Result
After months of design and development, the Allotments feature was finally ready for launch. This new feature is currently used by many international markets around the world. I met al lot of really dedicated people at KLM and I want to say thanks to everyone I worked with and in special Vincent Lafeber, Ralf Shipper, Bjorn Post and Irene Thomasse for this amazing opportunity.
